The Diary
August 5, 1996

1996 has been the year of opposites for bassist Dave Nichols. During these first six months, his agile bass playing, compositions, and engineering abilities have contributed to four new CD releases (see below). However, his battle against Lymphomia rages on. A persistent tumor on his leg continues to reappear, despite ever increasing dosages of chemotherapy. In July the tumor's fourth reappearence prompted doctors to place him on a dangerously high 8-day course. Such horrific exposure to what is essentially a poison, have left him very weak and extremely vunerable to disease. Dave has also been placed on the experiment drug, IL-2, and is currently receiving radiation therapy. Our prayers and hearts go out to Dave and his amazing wife Ruth during this challenging period.

Dave and Ruth

Dave's condition has taken a sad turn. The cancer spread to his bone marrow, which in his situation, is a terminal prognosis. More information to come...

Last evening ten musicians and one engineer gathered for an impromptu recording session of Dave's recent compositions. Participants included Dave Caceres, Warren Sneed, Joe Locasio, Aric Nitzberg, Joe Ferreria, Tim Solook, Ted Wenglenski, myself (Andrew Lienhard), Bob Chadwick, and Steve Bailey. The engineer was none other than Sugar Hill's Andy Bradley.

We recorded seven beautiful tunes whose melodies are hard to shake off. My wife told me how "The Weight" ran through her head all night. For me, it was his haunting ballad, "Waltz of Hope". Dave's talent is huge and this batch of tunes sums that up. They're a real treasure worthy of endless repetition.

The project will be released within the next few weeks with proceeds going directly to Ruth. I will post info as it comes available.
