Patrice Rushen - 'Signature' | |
|
February 18, 1998 by Mark Towns
Patrice Rushen Signature Walking a fine line between smooth jazz and respectability, keyboardist Patrice Rushen pulls off this delicate balancing act with "Signature", her first all instrumental album in over ten years. Probably best known as the composer of "Forget Me Nots", her 1982 top forty hit which last year became forever immortalized as the sampled backing track for the title tune to "Men In Black", Rushen delivers a consistent collection of smooth funk with hip heads that even jazz purists might dig. There's not a bad track in the bunch. The slinky, sometime sinister, and always sensuous grooves are reminiscent of early George Duke or late Miles Davis. It's that good - a funk jazz classic. **** (four stars) Mark Towns More Reviews
