Sam Taylor- Compositions for the Moons of Jupiter
March 21, 1998
by Blaine Fallis

What can I say? Quirky, inventive, unpredictable, unique. All those things and more from the trio "Moons of Jupiter," featuring Dallas based Sam Taylor (producer of King's X, Third Day, former nashville studio ace), and local talents Ray Dillard on drums/percussion, and Max Dyer on cello.

While not straight ahead jazz, it is certainly jazz influenced music, incorporating elements from such diverse styles as ragtime, gospel, classical, and swing. What do you get when mix all these things? The music of Sam.

Performances by Ray and Max are on target throughout. Max continues to extend the limits of the cello by using it as an upright bass at times, ripping bass lines with his bow at others, or soloing like a blues man with a mouth harp. And Ray proves his worth again by mixing his goody basket of trap set, tabla, yelp!, etc. into the compositions as appropriate.

But the story of this CD is Sam Taylor. Unfettered by record company restrictions, one gets the feeling that Sam was able to experiment with music that comes from deep within. His excursions on acoustic guitar and piano reveal his artistry. He is a true artist, with a unique voice and a lot to say.
