About the Houston Youth Symphony: The mission of the Houston Youth Symphony & Ballet (HYS&B) is to recruit, nurture and develop young musicians and dancers by enabling them to perform in a professional setting while enriching the cultural environment of Houston and the State of Texas. HYS&B was founded by Howard F. Webb
of the Houston Independent School District and the late Coralie Gregory Wood, former Supervisor
of Music, Houston Parks and Recreation Department, and filed its charter with the State of Texas
in 1948. Allegro Ballet joined with the Houston Youth
Symphony in 1955, and in 1964 the charter was revised to include the adoption of the
Allegro Ballet as an official ballet wing. Dedicated to youth, arts and education, HYS&B is
one of the largest youth symphonies in the United States, with more than 300 young artists
from 5 to 21 years of age. Nationally, it is the only organization that has a ballet wing.
Young musicians and dancers gain excellent career experience while learning to perform
with their peers in a structured environment. Alumni who live in Houston continue to enrich
our performing arts scene and can be found pursuing their careers in music and dance
throughout the United States.
