ATTENTION: Improv Freeks, Guitar Geeks, Coutry & Western Fans, DIY Devotees, and other friends.

I just wanted to let everyone know (if you didn't know already) about the concert at MECA on Sunday, January 23. "The Ernest Tubb Memorial Band" under the direction of Dr. Eugene Chadbourne.

I thought I'd quote a note from the Epistrophy Arts (Austin Promoter) Press Release.

"Eugene Chadbourne is an uncategorizable musician and a virtuoso instrumentalist. He belongs to the maverick tradition of American musicians that includes Sun Ra, Harry Partch, Charles Ives, Captain Beefheart, and select others.. He is a world renowned composer, performer, improvisor, and songwriter and has been crafting his own sonic universe for over 30 years, with 100's of releases to his name. John Zorn described him as "one of the world's greatest guitarists and visionary thinkers" The list of musicians he has collaborated with is immense and varied. It includes several musicians Epistrophy Arts has presented in the past including Wadada Leo Smith, CCMC, Steve Lacy, and Jim O'Rourke. He has also collaborated with many folks we haven't presented but would love to, including John Zorn, Derek Bailey, Han Bennink, Lol Coxhill, Misha Mengelberg, Frank Lowe, Paul Lovens and many others. His amplified rake recitals have received wide critical acclaim..."

The ensemble will feature the talents of Susan Alcorn (pedal steel guitar virtuoso; like Chadbourne, she has created her own blend of avant-garde improvisation and country and western music . . . a Houston treasure), David Dove (trombone, that's me), Walter Daniels (harmonica player from Jack O' Fire and Big Foot Chester), and of course Dr. Chadbourne (guitar and banjo). The group will be playing what Chadbourne calls "Freeform, Avant-Garde, Country and Western Bebop".

The MECA concert starts st 7:30 pm. It's $7 admission. MECA is on 1900 Kane in the Sixth Ward. From Washington, turn South on Silver. Turn right on Kane. You can't miss it. Call Sound Exchange for info and directions . . . 713-666-5555.

On Wednsday, January 26 at 4pm, Chadbourne will be giving a lecture on the subject of the music industry on Rice Radio, KTRU 91.7. Afterwards, cruise on over to Sound Exchange for his free solo concert.

If you're in Austin . . . on Friday the 21st, Chadbourne plays a solo set, warming up for Big Foot Chester, at the Hole in The Wall on Guadalupe. The Ernest Tubb Memorial Band plays on Saturday the 22nd at Flatbed Galleries, 2832 E. MLK Jr. Blvd. Doors open at 8pm, show starts at 9pm.

Thanks for your time. I hope to see you there,
Dave Dove
