While you instrumentalists have been entertaining each other with "chick singer" jokes, the vocalists have infiltrated our favorite jazz joint, Cézanne. Better watch your back, they may grab a few weekends if we're not careful.

Word of their nefarious scheme reached us just recently. Here are some of the co-conspirators:

  • April 7th--Bill Sager
  • April 13th--Madeleine Elmer of "Bayou Bop"
  • April 20th--Steve Duson of "Bayou Bop"
  • April 27th--Diane Landry

Cindy Scott will be hosting the uprising each week, and she files this battle plan:

    Attention Jazz Vocalists!!!!

Starting on Thursday, April 6th, at Cézanne---Jazz Vocal Thursday! Jazz Vocal Thursday will be hosted by singer Cindy Scott and Friends featuring pianist Gary Norian, Woody Witt on saxes, bassist Thomas Helton, and Tim Solook on drums. The hours are 8-11 p.m., and there will be a $5 cover.

    Here’s how it works:

Each Thursday, Cindy and the quartet will do the first and third set. The second set will feature a different guest vocalist each week. If you are a vocalist and would like to take advantage of this great opportunity, you need to do four things:

    1. Contact Cindy or Gary to book your particular Thursday night.

    2. Have accurate lead sheets in your key for 8-10 tunes. This is not a jam session or a talent show, so good lead sheets are essential. And as you may already know, a book with clean, accurate charts in your keys makes you a singer that instrumentalists would be delighted to work with. (Just ask one). We will help you prepare these if you need assistance. All vocalists may, if they choose, meet with Gary a few days prior to their performance to go over the lead sheets, etc.

    3. EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!!! Invite as many people as humanly possible to your Thursday night. Cézanne is a business, and no matter how great we may sound, the bills are paid with cover charges and drink sales.

    4. Show up at Cézanne on Thursdays to hear the other singers, and help create the supportive vibe that will be a big part of the fun. Tell everybody you know to come. Your help is needed to keep this outlet going. Jazz Vocal Thursday will continue at Cézanne for as long as we can keep the place busy.

The idea here is to have a weekly convergence of music, fun, and exposure for singers of all experience levels. Jazz Vocal Thursday is an outlet to perform in a cool venue, as well as an opportunity to add new tunes to your book. If you’re a working pro, here’s a chance to try new material with a burning and responsive band. If you’re new to the scene, here’s an opportunity to get some real club experience in front of a receptive audience with that same band. The environment will be easy-going, supportive, and most of all, fun.

Right now, April is booked, May is just about locked in, and June is starting to fill up. Let’s take advantage of this opportunity to make Thursday nights at Cézanne a weekly party for great jazz, good friends, new contacts, and plenty of fun. Here's how to reach us:

    Cindy Scott Tel: 713.468.3837 E-mail: cindy_scott@hotmail.com

    Gary Norian 713.283.7645 E-mail: nordoan@earthlink.net

We look forward to hearing from you,

    Cindy and Gary
