by Andrew Lienhard It is with great regret that I announce Ben Turner's death. Ben was well known around town because more than any other player, he made the rounds. You'd usually find him sitting at the bar or a table in the back waiting to join the action on stage. Indeed, no local jazz gig would be complete with out a swinging blues lead by his unique scat. Ben didn't always claim the voice as his primary instrument. 20+ years ago, he was Arnette Cobb's drummer. But then a stroke robbed him of the use of his right arm. Being the musician that he was however, Turner found a new musical outlet: his voice. I just found out this news, thanks to a post in the Jazz Forum so I don't have any info. We will update you as we learn more. One thing: please attend his funeral. Show Ben the support and love he showed all of us over the years. He'll be greatly missed. UPDATE: The Wake will be on Thursday from 7-9PM James Stripling Funeral Home 1402 Cleburne Hpouston, TX 77004 (713)526-0091 On Saturday at the Pan-African Festival 1PM has been reserved as the Friends of Ben Turner Jazz Ensemble. Come on out to Miller Outdoor Theatre with your ax.
